Why Are My Vocal Abilities Inconsistent?

Some days I’m very good at singing, but other days it can be really hard for me too hit the right notes. Why is this, and will it effect my career?

Hey Kelsey,

Unfortunately, there are a lot of factors that can effect the way our voice feels when we sing, from what we eat, to what we drink, to allergies, to what time of the month it is for females, to sickness, to how much we sleep, to the weather. This is something that every singer experiences and ultimately learns to get past.

It does get easier with time, but you also have to learn what you can and can’t get away with. For me personally, I drink probably 10-12 glasses of water a day, maybe 2 caffeinated drinks, and get at least 7 hours of sleep each night. I eat healthy (ultimately), and can’t let my dog sleep with me b/c it bothers my allergies. I also have to keep my house pretty clean, b/c dust triggers my allergies.

However, if I drink too much caffeine, or only get like 5 hrs of sleep, or maybe even clean out the vacuum cleaner and am exposed to a lot of dust, my vocal cords tend to get either dry or swollen, making singing much more difficult.

But, I know what triggers it, so I can avoid doing these things before I sing or have a long day of teaching ahead of me.

I say all of this to make this point – start paying attention to your body and learn what effects your voice. By knowing yourself, you’ll be able to avoid many of the things that might get in the way.

Also, it’s nice to know that once you develop a solid and consistent vocal technique, singing even when you’re voice isn’t feeling 100% perfect becomes easier as well.

I hope this helps!

Best,
