How to Get Vibrato at a Young Age

Thanks so much! I’m also wondering, does your vibrato really develop when you’re 25? My music teacher told me that, and could it be possible to get your vibrato at a young age? If it is, how can it develop?

Hey Sandy,

Umm, I’ve never heard anyone say that vibrato won’t develop until you’re 25… that’s somewhat peculiar. I would have to respectfully disagree. I know many singers that have a nice vibrato, and had it easily a decade before then.
So, is it possible to have vibrato before 25, yes. So how do we do it? Well, that’s sometimes the tricky part. Since vibrato is actually the product of a healthy voice, teaching someone to do something that supposedly happens naturally is kind of impossible.

However, if you’re looking to develop a vibrato, here are a couple of things you can try.

First off, to me, the easiest way to create a vibrato is simply by mimicking others. This may or may not be a good way because you could create the sound by forcing the vibrato, but to me, it is probably the easiest way.

However, if you’re looking for a way to create vibrato that doesn’t involve any manipulation of your vocal mechanism, try this. Place the top of your hand on your lowest ribs stretching down onto the abdomen. Then, have someone else push in and out on that hand while you’re holding a note. This will give you the sensation of what vibrato feels like without having to manufacture it.

The only issue with this technique is that you need another person for it to work, so it’s not always that practical, but it is a great way to get a feel for what a natural vibrato should feel like.

Give these a try and see if they help.

Good luck!
