I have a decent voice, but when I try to be louder than a whisper it sounds like I’im yelling. What do I do?
That’s interesting. If it sounds like you’re yelling, then it’s a problem of vocal balance. Here are a handful of things you can try to do and see if they help you.
1. Keep your tongue and neck muscles relaxed when singing. Check out this article on Breathing and Singing.
3. Finally, you might just try to think of singing as just the same as speaking, just on different pitches. I know this sounds simplistic, but I think sometimes we as singers “try” way to hard to sing. Singing is just an extension of the speaking voice, so one of the best things you can do for your voice is try to duplicate the same relaxed sensation you get while speaking while you sing. Do this, and many unnecessary vocal tensions will disappear.
I hope this helps! Best of luck to ya!
