How can I Improve My Range & Stop My Voice From Breaking?

My voice is very weak and breaks very easily in the mornings, which lasts for a few hours after i wake up. During the day my voice eventually gets better and i can hit higher notes. However my voice still breaks and I can’t hit some of the higher notes. What can I do to improve my range and stop my voice from breaking so much? ~ Dylan

Hey Dylan,

We all struggle with singing in the mornings. In a way, just talking throughout the course of the day helps to warm us up to an extent. Whenever I have to sing in the mornings, I’m up a minimum of an hour and a half to two hours before I have to sing, and I warm up really slowly. It’s a pain, because I’m not much of a morning person, but I also like sounding my best :-)

To move onto your question about it is possible to improve range, absolutely. Breaks in our voice are due to an imbalance in our vocal mechanism. This means there could be too much or too little air flow, too much tension or pressure, or it could even be psychological (there’s nothing that’ll make someone more likely to crack than hesitation and questioning whether or not their high notes will sound good).

All that being said, there are a few articles I’ve already written that give practical advice on how to increase your range and sing with ease. Here are a couple of my favorites:

How to Expand Your Range

How to Sing High

Give these a read and try out the concepts within them and see how they help.

I wish you the best of luck, and look forward to hearing about the positive results you find.

Best,
